Nitin Chandrakant Desai (TOI Photo)Award-winning director Nitin Chandrakant Desai is a really busy man. At present, he is tied up with Mira Nairs Shantaram starring Johnny Depp and Amitabh Bachchan. Remarks the man who is all set to give the film the look it needs, International cinema is fun. Their techniques and standards are very good. Not only that, his artistic brilliance will be soon seen in the upcoming Bollywood flicks including Ketan Mehtas Rang Rasia, Madhur Bhandarkars Fashion, Aamir Khans Delhi Belly, Slumdog Millionaire and Sushmita Sens Jhansi Ki Rani.
Responsible for the exquisite look of Sanjay Leela Bhansalis magnum opus Devdas among others, Nitin loves doing period films. According to him, one has to transport ones self to that era to create a masterpiece.
So, which one has been his favourite project? Now, thats a tough one. Everything I have done was challenging as we had to create the best within a given budget, says Nitin. As he talks about his projects, his passion for art direction is clearly evident. Being a production designer is fun. In all my births, I want to be born as an art designer. We try to recreate the magic of bygone eras, taking care of the minutest details like mirrors, bedrooms, fabrics, living rooms, walls and other things, says Nitin. Known for his authentic recreation of historic periods and places, he still affirms that he has a lot to learn.
I have learnt only A of art direction. I still have a long way to go. But, whatever I do, I do it straight from the heart, adds he. What makes his work stand out from the rest? I always try to make the audience feel less like a spectator and more like a participant. The movement of colour is very important in keeping the spirit of the film alive, asserts Nitin. For him, to recreate the magic of the forgotten past is a lot of joy. After reading the script and doing research, we make sketches, 3D presentations and models. The best part of art direction is that you get the opportunity to design and execute the sets which you dont get to do in other fields. I get a lot of creative satisfaction, he explains. When we see the outcome on the big screen, what we get is immense satisfaction and pleasure as well.
